I've been thinking about survival and how trauma effects us a lot lately and then I got the email that this book was finally available from overdrive. I put it on hold so long ago that I'd forgotten I put it on hold.
I was nervous about reading a story from a 5 year old's perspective but I was pleasantly surprised by how well it was done. I found an honesty in Jack's story telling that was beautiful and heartbreaking. Watching Ma deal with life through Jack's eyes softens the blows of this story while letting the reader go there in their own mind. I cried, cringed and smiled at this book. I don't think I'll reread it but Donoghue crafted a surprisingly beautiful story.
